About Us Introduction

Sophiatown also known as Sof'town or KOFIFI, was a suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sophiatown was a legendary black cultural hub that was destroyed under apartheid, rebuilt under the name of Triomf, and in 2006 officially returned to its original name. Sophiatown was one of the oldest black/bantu areas in Johannesburg and its destruction represents some of the excesses of South Africa under apartheid. Despite the violence and poverty, it was the epicentre of politics, jazz and blues during the 1940s and 1950s.

The social scenes were also characterized by different race groups, with Asians and Europeans dominating after the Bantu people. It produced some of South Africa's most famous writers, musicians, politicians and artists. The event seeks to provide an atmosphere to re-live the life in KOFIFI. We propose that the event be held at Meropa Casino’s Jembe Tavern.

Background

The first and second Limpopo Annual Kofifi Dance Party were held at Waterland Polokwane in 2013 and Meropa Casino 2014 respectively; and the concept was well received. The similar event has been recently held in Carousel Casino in Hammanskraal and Morula Sun in Mabopane. The events were very successful and attended by more than 1000 people. Older people seek a different place to have fun with their partners and thus provided an atmosphere for exactly that.

In all Kofifi Dance Movement events, we continue re-live Sophia-Town (Kofifi) times, we dress Kofifi, carry Kofifi (old school) Gadgets, Kofifi Make-Up etc. The event is about creativity, style and flair (60s Swag)… Brandwoods, Floshem, Rokoroko, Metotobolo, Daks of London, Magusha, Street Fighter, Berets, etc… The event was driven by the need to bring something new and fresh in South Africa,
